I always enjoy your articles Umair, but in this case, I don’t think the USA has a ‘unique’ (failed) moral philosophy. Aggressive self interest has always been at the core of British politics. Historically, we no longer talk of the British Empire but our worst excesses, as a country, are crystallized there. The continuing class system is our own special brand of suffering (and racism). Poverty, culpability and criminality have been conflated so successfully that we even have ‘poverty porn’ — TV shows that exist solely to exploit the worst behaviour of the unemployed. It’s not enough to suffer here; you have to be seen to suffer. This then feeds into the shared belief that all unemployment is a lifestyle choice. We’ve had 10 years of ‘austerity’, which has doubled the wealth of the super rich, crushed the poor and hollowed out the middle classes. Our welfare policies are so severe that the UN is actually investigating them. Our suicide rate is rising dramatically and chances of personal improvement (for the poor) next to nil.
