FDM by its nature is a hobbiest thing. There are just to many potential points of failure for it to be truly “plug and play”.

Having said that, Monoprice has quickly built a large hobbiest community around their MP Select Mini printer (see the Facebook page.)

Their secret? A minimally complex device that is about as reliable as any FDM machine and retails under $200.

SLA has the potential to be both more reliable and higher quality, but the cost of the photo-responsive resin is likely to keep it out of the low end market a plug and play printer would need to fill.
