There’s No Such Thing As A Protest Vote

“Conscience is what keeps you from doing things that feel good to you but hurt other people?” That is a very shallow, egoistic definition of the term. Conscience is a deep moral sense, and acting upon it involves setting the ego aside. That’s why conscientious objectors risk prison, why underground resistors in wartime risk their lives: the alternatives involve greater harm to more than just themselves. Do egoistic desires sometimes masquerade as conscience? Certainly. But to presume that everyone not voting for one of two parties is voting their ego is, well, presumptuous; and condescending. Many people feel very deeply that the lesser of two evils is still too evil, that justice will not be served by either party. My conscience tells me to vote Hillary, because I foresee greater pain and suffering under a Trump presidency; but barely. If you wish to speak effectively to those whose conscience tells them otherwise, you might start by getting off your high horse.
