“The vast majority of disrespect, rudeness and condescension happens in what many would call the nicer neighborhoods.”

You are probably correct, having a better perspective from the stories your husband shares. I speak for myself when I say that I have always made an effort, regardless of my degree and job, to interact with everyone, including housekeeping, food service, security, contractors, and bus drivers. I have found these folks to be far more interesting and full of stories that are surprisingly thoughtful than many of my peers. I would rather sit around drinking a beer with them then attending a social function with coworkers. Every job is important to the whole of society. And every person is important to the whole of humanity. Think how depressing it would be if we ignored people because of their jobs or race or gender or any of a hundred variables that make each of us unique. I have my parents to thank for a lot of what I think and how I behave today. And I have passed this on to my children. One of the most important things to remember is that it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you do the best you can.
