A Letter to My Daughter About Young Men

When the boy tries to put his hand up your shirt it could mean he loves you. I grew up awkward and shy and never knew how to pull a trick like making a girl believe you love them when you don’t. I did break a few hearts but nothing I’m ashamed of.

My biggest problem was the dishonorable girl, who feigns emotional injury, takes all your money, your house, your kids (she tries to anyways), and convinces everyone you used to know that you’re garbage. That was my first wife. Punishment for leaving her.

To my daughters: don’t be like your mother. Be an equal partner. Don’t be afraid to make yourself vulnerable, injuries are much easier to cope with than lifelong regrets. Make mistakes. Learn about men, how they think, what they want. Study the differences between young and old. Practice forgiveness, you’ll need it if you plan on having kids.

Be someone that others can rely on when they’re in need. Think about people outside of your immediate family and friends. Give, early and often. All this will pay off long term.
