People Who Use Wheelchairs Don’t Actually Want to Kill Themselves
David Bekhour

I love this piece, but am saddened by those who express the desire to kill themselves because of their disability. I don’t know all of what is leading them to this feeling, but in a world where all disabled are treated as objects of pity, I can see how easy it is to get to that place. Many disabled people stay secluded and don’t get out in the world because that world frankly acts as if it doesn’t want them. If they do “want” them around, they mostly won’t give them the respect of having a voice. I’ve seen organizations entirely focused on empowering the disabled who amazingly don’t have anyone with a disability in leadership, or as a spokesperson, and not for lack of candidates.
