Kind of a knee-jerk reaction, eh? Let’s revisit …

Moon’s hot or cold (no warm, but 2 choices is ok no?). Pretty close to the earth too, in case you forgot your screwdriver. Not like Mars, or God-forbid some moon of Saturn. Easy to power a colony with solar as you can get lots of sun there if you so desire. Tunnels below the surface would probably work best for living, as the temp and radiation would be easily moderated, and no danger of micrometeoroids zipping in. Musk’s contention is that we need to practice being a multiplanet species “just in case” some wacko-in-chief hoses the whole place, or a wandering asteroid decides settle down and call Earth its home. The practice on the moon might do us some good for the real thing somewhere else.
