I drink a lot of soda, most of it the “delicious Diet Coke” mentioned by the author. I have zero doubts that if I switched to soda containing sugar, but kept everything else in my life exactly the same, I would gain weight. Consequently, no, artificial sweeteners are not helping my lose weight, but they are helping me avoid gaining weight.

Again, it is just a matter of what, exactly, the question is that is being addressed by the study.
