We need such legislation in New York State. In 2016, transgender legal protections were added to the New York State Human Rights Law (NYSHRL), but used binary language to describe gender identity and expression.

Interestingly, the designation of “X” as a gender marker comes from Australia, who originally used “X” as a gender-neutral designation when processing the entry of refugees whose genders might not readily be apparent from their names alone.
