#WatchtheWrestling Revolution Pro Wrestling UK February 2017

The crowd wanted big names and that’s what it got.

Its not often that I get excited about going to Portsmouth, but when you get to see some of the biggest names in the indie wrestling scene, you have to make that short trip to Hampshire.

The Portsmouth Guildhall played host to the Revolution Pro Wrestling Friday night graps, which is a big space. Plenty of room for the stars to pedal their wears, where I casually bought a t-shirt from Trent Seven like it was a packet of cigarettes.

But despite the large space, it was pleasantly filled out. A large crowd were comfortably seated around the ring, and even the cheap seats of £13 where I sat were still a great view.

And its the crowd that were the most interesting part of the evening.

The people sat around me were from all spectrums of the scene. Elderly men who got very annoyed at the heel antics, students from the local uni, kids decked out in John Cena merch and smarky marks in this 30s.

But it felt like many of them were there for the big names and had no time for anything else. The contenders divison, the trainees, were universally shat on and the last comedy tag match was clocked watched as a barrier to the main event. But when you got a Scrull or Dunne out there, you got the crowd on side.

Which was a shame, because the Contenders Division are trying to learn and develop, they need the to learn to feel the crowd. And your never going to get the next generations of Sevens without trainees wrestling marches.

When the whole crowd was into the match it was well worth the attendance fee. When they weren’t, bored fans tried to fill their time and hijack the match with chants. It grew tedious.

I was initially annoyed no womens wrestling was booked, but I don’t think sections of the crowd would of cared for it. And despite the crowd the Contenders Divison match showed promise.

But I didn’t leave Portsmouth unhappy, it was a good show. The big names worked well with lesser known talent to put on matches that were short but an enjoyable length.

Standouts were

  • Marty Scrull’s presence.
  • Ryan Smile’s selling
  • Colt Cabana’s comedy energy.
  • Trent Seven getting a handshake attempt with Dave Mastiff over.
  • The Spirit Squad pre-match promo.
  • Rob Lias of the Contenders Divison showing heel character promise.
  • Pete fucking Dunne.

I would go and watch Revolution Pro Wrestling again. The price and space was great for some entertaining graps. You can find out about their future events here: http://www.revolutionprowrestling.com/events
