As one born in the North and brought South in 1959, i was at once startled by the hypocrisy. Sunady was for Sunday School and Church, and little else. Every Monday, public school classes counted how many went to church and Sunday School the day before. As a Catholic, I kept my class from making “100%”, because we did not have Sunday School.
On the local TV “Kid’s Show”, with cartoons, contests, and LIVE local (white) children, there was ALWAYS someone asked to sing. And some little girl or boy would sing, “Jesus Loves the Little Children” (“red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in HIS sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world!”)
Meanwhile, back in the real world, you would hear a joke: What is black inside, yellow outside, and as funny as hell?
“A schoolbus of …”coloreds”….going off a cliff.”
And this was the United States, circa 1960. God Forgive America.
