That moment when you find yourself face to face with a clearly impressionable person, and you wonder to yourself, “Should I do what I’m being paid to do? Should I contribute to everything wrong in our society by effectively allowing my employer to buy this person’s vote?”

This isn’t how canvassing works at all.

I’m surprised it made a weird job listings list at all. Canvassing is a very normal job. It’s mostly boring, occasionally scary and sometimes fun. It’s never a proposition where you run into a random uneducated voter who will do whatever you say, though. In fact studies are unclear on whether or not canvassing has any effect on likelihood a measure will pass. In some specific circumstances it does, like if you send gay people to canvass for gay marriage (the effect evaporates if the canvasser is a straight person talking theoretically, it only works for people sharing personal stories). But it’s definitely not effective enough to qualify as buying a vote.

Go volunteer for a candidate you like and try it, it’s actually very enlightening!
