Paper seed packet

I wanted to make some seed packets for storing next years seeds in. There are plenty of instructions available online but they all seem to involve cutting. I’d prefer to be able to construct something out of the paper I have at hand. I’ve used single A4, US letter would probably work fine too.

Here is the finished packet:

The images below are from my deconstruction so it looks prefolded.

Instructions

  1. Fold into thirds lengthways. You can fold into quarters which is easier and produces a wider packet. For A4 the easiest way I’ve found to fold by thirds is to measure 7cm from each edge.

2. Unfold and then fold in half.

3. Unfold and then fold again to about 4cm from the edge. The gap between this and the half fold forms the standing base of the packet.

4. Unfold. Now the next part is the most tricky. We need to make 4 corner folds to bring in the walls. As before, after each fold unfold it again. Fold in along the thirds

5. Pull the fold out while holding the bottom. It should start folding diagonally as per the image. At the closest center fold the paper needs to be moving up to form the wall.

Pull it from here

6. Pull it all the way across making the diagonal fold.

The diagonal folds must be 45º

7. Now unfold it and do it to the next corner.

8. Once all 4 corners have the prefolds we can just fold them all to produce the packet. Pull in one third and do the diagonal fold. Then fold over the other third on top and do its diagonal fold.

9. Turn it around. The other side is a bit trickier because the paper will have to push past. Once this is done you have the packet shape with a large and a smaller tab.

Difficult to capture an image of this part. You can see the packet forming in the middle.

10. Fold the small tab straight in, leaving the large tab.

Large tab is left

11. Fold the large tab in leaving a small amount of it sticking out the top. It should fold all the way to the bottom.

12. As you fold down the last bit push in the sides so that they fold inwards at the top. The last tab should be heavy enough to keep the packet closed.
