The Thriving World, the Wilting World, and You
Anand Giridharadas

I am setting up a new business to help individuals build brands that make a difference as I read this article. I have always believed in the power of business as a force for good, having been lucky enough to work for leading visionaries like Yvon Chouinard at Patagonia, Jeff Swartz at Timberland and Richard Branson at Virgin. With your insight and eloquence, you have articulated one of the greatest moral challenges we face in business. Is there really a business model for the future that goes beyond CSR and Sustainability and is truly net-positive for the planet? Are we really only buying a better conscience with the business philanthropy we do? I am always inspired by businesses like Sustain Condoms, people like Peter Diamandis and visionaries like Elon Musk who, having got a very reasonable way up Maslow’s hierarchy, are creating businesses that address the grand challenges of humanity. If we all tried to build businesses this way, would that be a better future? Thank you for giving me even more pause for thought, and inspiration to keep trying.
