Even as Black women we need to do a better job of showing up ourselves. Black women still keep Black men centered as victims of police violence, when the reality is BOTH sistas and brothas are victims. Many of us are more passionate and emotional when a brotha is killed than a Black woman. Some Black women still blame our sistas who are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, especially when the offender is a famous Black male. If we’re the backbone of today’s civil rights movement, and there is low attendance at #SayHerName rallies, that’s because we as Black women aren’t showing up ourselves. We have to stop putting everyone else before us.
