Wallpaper Project
Group 1 - Day 1

After reading through The Scotsman and making a shortlist of possible news stories to visually communicate, we selected a piece written by Samuel Young — the deputy head of policy and public affairs at Creative Industries Federation — suggesting that the creative industry of Scotland will be adversely affected by a ‘no deal’ or ‘bad deal’ Brexit and that it will reduce the creative talent and skills available in the UK. The story holds the negative viewpoint that the bureaucracy will build barriers and walls, making life difficult for Scottish creatives.
We have decided to portray this situation with a positive viewpoint. We believe every ‘wall’ put up by bureaucracy is just a new challenge, mere stumbling ‘blocks’ for creatives to get around. We’re choosing to demonstrate with our wallpaper an opportunity for ‘rebirth’ of scottish creative talent.
We cannot believe that Scotland needs to rely on outside help for the survival of its’ creative industry and anybody who says otherwise, just ask them to take a look at the ‘Glasgow School’ and ‘Scottish Colourists’ art movements.

Day 2

Today we worked on sketching out some ideas and concepts for our wallpaper. The main ideas we wanted to visually portray were the ‘rebirth’ of Scottish creativity which we decided to use a fetal form to represent and ‘stumbling blocks/barriers’ of a bad/no Brexit deal portrayed by brick shapes. Another concept we considered was a ‘loophole’ to get around these challenges by creating a circular pattern with the shapes but in the end we didn’t continue with this concept.

Day 3
This morning we had a demo of the Risograph machine with Hannah to explain the printing process and possible techniques used when printing our final designs.

We settled on our final design idea today after making some tweaks in accordance with our new knowledge regarding how to work the Risograph. We wanted to create a repeat pattern featuring icons/symbols to represent the creative arts which we found examples of on the newspaper page next to the article.
Day 4 — Printing with Risograph and Presenting.
