THANK YOU for such a profound explanation! I grew up in California, but, I only just learned in the past year that the vast majority of my “kin” lives in North Carolina and surrounding states. I served in the Marine Corps and I lived in those Southern states where many people claimed Native blood, primarily Cherokee. Being the well read person that I am, I would argue that “wouldn’t they know about you? The Cherokee have always been pretty keen on documentation…”. NOW I have a better grasp of “why” people would claim this ancestry.
