great weaver of tapestries

Anasansi —

great weaver of tapestries,

webbed wonders.

She first sends out one thread,

trusting it to take hold, one single line that catches.

She’ll send another,

then another and another, connecting all until

her work is finished, formed, functional.

In time, the web — well-used, weathered, and worn —

must be replaced.

Releasing the old, she begins

to weave anew.

Our Present Golden Age

Three spirits rise up from Charlottesville; three bodies fall cold and still.

A rage against race, a race against hate.

Fist flies too fast.
Car flies in crowded space.

Body flies too slow.

Color, what is color? Skin, what is skin?
Skin holds us together, yet color…

News coming thru the phone,

the stories hit me to the bone.

There’s so much guilt and pain,

but who will ever take the blame?

Music falls silent

on ears still ringing

in the wake of empty words,

so little left to sing.

May there be peace in the morning.

Whaling Blue

There is a voice

for all these years

has haunted me, taunted

me, called me a whale

beached on the shore.

-

In shame, I cover

myself, turn away, hide

my flesh, foolish,

ridiculous, a behemoth

lying naked upon the sand.

-

Listen, the ocean calls you to…

Enoch’s Dream

I awaken to dark of midnight. My eyes clear, and for the first time I see stars, and I am not alone.

Sitting elbow to elbow, with elders of lore, we mix a remedy to heal the broken world. We crush the light of ancient stars, scatter the dust over the surface of the earth.

“Change is coming,” they say, “Fear not destruction; dead skin flakes away, leaving all renewed.”

With Enoch in a wheel within a wheel, I ride the chariot into deep space, reaching for the fingertips of God. Together we pull closed the fractured light of the universe.

“Change is coming,” they say, “Fear not destruction; dead skin flakes away, leaving all renewed.”

I awaken at dawn of morning. My mind clears and for the first time, I’ve seen stars, and I am not alone. We are whole.
