Although 18-year-old Dana Stidham no longer lived with her parents, she had only moved 10 minutes away and frequently returned to their Hiwasse, Arkansas, home to do her laundry. On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 25, 1989, Dana left the Centerton, Arkansas, apartment she shared with her brother, Larry, and headed for her parents’ house with a load of her dirty clothes. Her mother, Georgia, was at work when she arrived but her father, Lawrence, was home.

Lawrence hadn’t been feeling well, and not long after Dana got to the house he asked if she would mind running to a local store to pick up some medicine for him. Dana agreed. Around 3:00 pm, she climbed into her 1984 Dodge Omni and set off on the short drive to a local grocery store. She never returned with the medicine.

When Georgia got home from work, she was concerned to learn that Dana had left for the store more than two hours earlier and hadn’t come back. Dana was an extremely responsible teenager who always went out of her way to help people; there was no way she would have allowed her father to wait so long for his medicine. Worried that she might have had car trouble, Georgia and Lawrence decided to drive…
