Brianna Maitland was tired when she finished work around 11:20 pm on the night of March 19, 2004. She was working as a dishwasher at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery, Vermont, and it had been a long night. Several of her co-workers decided to head to a diner to get some food after work, and they asked Brianna if she wanted to go with them. She thought about it for a minute, but told them that she wanted to go home and get some sleep. She had a second job as a waitress at a restaurant in St. Albans, Vermont, and she was scheduled to work a shift there in the morning. She told her co-workers she would see them later, and left the Black Lantern Inn alone.

The last couple months had been rough for Brianna, but she was in a great mood as she left work that night. Earlier that morning, she had passed the math portion of the GED exam; it was the last thing she needed to do to earn her high school diploma. Although she was a very intelligent girl, Brianna had struggled to fit in during high school. All of her friends lived about 15 miles away and went to a different high school, and Brianna ended up dropping out of school a month earlier…
