Alicia Markovich was visiting with her father at his Blairsville, Pennsylvania home on Sunday, April 26, 1987. The 15-year-old, who lived with her mother in Windber, Pennsylvania, had been reluctant to go on the scheduled visitation; her parents had been fighting recently over a $100-a-month increase in child support that her mother had been trying to obtain, and Alicia feared she would be dragged into the middle of their fight.

Alicia continued to express concern during the 45-minute drive to her father’s home, but her mother, Marcie, assured her that everything would be fine. She told Alicia that if her father tried to discuss the child support money, she should tell him that it was an issue between the two adults and to leave her out of it.

Marcie left Alicia in Blairsville, assuming that everything would be fine and Alicia would have a nice visit with her father. She had no idea that she had just seen her daughter for the last time.

Marcie tried to call Alicia a couple of times that afternoon, but no one answered her calls and she figured that Alicia and her father had gone out. When her phone rang late that night…
