It was bitterly cold when Benjamin Roseland left his friend’s Clinton, Iowa, apartment to walk to a nearby store at 10:45 pm on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The 19-year-old pulled a pair of camouflage coveralls over his jeans and polo shirt and left to make the three-minute walk to the Hy-Vee grocery store. He told his friend he would be right back, but he never returned and was never seen again.

At the time of his disappearance, Ben lived at home with his parents and two sisters and was a student at Clinton County Community College. His family was immediately concerned when they learned that he had gone out for snacks and never returned to his friend’s apartment; his mother, Theresa Roseland, called the Clinton Police Department and tried to report the teenager missing but police assumed he was a runaway and made no attempt at locating him.

Ben’s parents were certain he hadn’t left voluntarily. He was a good student who was paying for his college classes with his own money; he wouldn’t have simply stopped attending. More concerning, he had been in a serious car accident on November 29, 2007, and was still recovering from his injuries when he went missing. He had sustained multiple skull fractures…
