At first glance, Felipe Santos and Terrance Williams seem to have little in common other than the fact that each had moved to Florida in the hopes of building a better life for themselves. Though they lived in the same county, there is nothing to suggest that their paths ever crossed. It wasn’t until they disappeared just three months apart from each other that their names would become permanently linked.

Felipe, a Mexican citizen, was the second of five brothers and had spent much of his life in the rural state of Oaxaca. He had a reputation for being humble and hardworking, but jobs were scarce in his impoverished hometown. Tired of living in poverty, Felipe, his wife Apolonia, and his two brothers, Jorge and Salvador, entered the United States illegally in 2000. Their main reason for coming to America was to obtain employment, and their job search eventually took them to Florida. They ended up in Immokalee, an area of Collier County that was saturated with farmland. The majority of the workforce here was made up of Mexican, Haitian, and Guatemalan immigrants.
