I loved reading this. This whole post reflects one of the areas that bubbled up for me during my altMBA experience. Higher education is indeed at a crossroads - declining student enrollment, rising tuition costs, decreases in public funding for state institutions, and the general reluctance of this current generation to absorb massive amounts of debt in exchange for the accreditation are all forcing institutions to do some serious self-reflection. The ones that will be successful are the ones that will proactively transform themselves. Unfortunately, I find most trying to maintain the status quo. Much like individuals, to truly transform these institutions have to embrace change and wrestle with fear.
