I N N E R. E G O.
Our egos are hustlers and it hustles the blame, the excuses, the reasons, the payback and the avoidance. It likes to blame, and not give a damn. So it makes excuses not to feel …. numbing the pain.
Numbing! Today was shit – I’m going to numb myself with a nice glass of wine. I just got some bad news – I’m going to eat as many chips I can possibly fit in my mouth.
Brene Brown states that after a while the mere anticipation of these feelings can trigger a sense of vulnerability. We know it’s coming and so our first response is to quickly numb the pain.
OMG – Make it go away – now !!
We take the edge off with alcohol, drugs, food, work, shopping and now the Internet with social media. We live so hard and always stay busy, so that we don’t lean into the discomfort or feel our way through.
As we are numbing the yucky emotions we are also numbing the ‘light’ .
When having a couple of glasses of wine becomes a routine and we become duller we feel less, we have less positive emotion in our lives, and we become less curious.
Give yourself permission to feel emotion, to get curious about it and to pay attention to it. It’s not easy, but as we practise, as we become aware – we pay attention and we start to own it and the dark will start to fade into light.
