1. Read the report “2015 Pulse of the Profession. Capturing the Value of Project Management” by PMI mentioned in the What Went Right section, page 194 of the 8th Edition of the book. Summarize the key points on this study and your opinion of it. Describe some specific steps organization can take to provide a supportive culture for project management.
Business value plays an important role in order to excel in project management. Executive sponsors must engage in projects and programs and also organization should fully aware and understands the importance of Project Management.
Some factors that need to consider are knowledge transfer, risk management, agile, benefits realization, and maturity. Implement and exercise standardized project management practices throughout the organization.
An organization must focus on the fundamental aspect of culture, talent or skills and process or how they will manage a project through strategies. Project Plan is useful for organization especially for project managers and for teams in order to perform work and monitor the progress during execution. A good planning for work leads to provide strong leadership and supportive culture.
2. Perform a financial analysis for a project using the format provided in the book(IT Project Management, Revised 6e). Assume that the projected costs and benefits for this project are spread over four years as follows: Estimated costs are $200,000 in Year 1 and $30,000 each year in Years 2, 3, and 4. Estimated benefits are $0 in Year 1 and $100,000 each year in Years 2, 3, and Use a 9 percent discount rate, and round the discount factors to two decimal places. Create a spreadsheet or use the business case financials template on the companion Web site to calculate and clearly display the NPV, ROI, and year in which payback occurs. In addition, write a paragraph explaining whether you would recommend investing in this project, based on your financial analysis.

Develop an outline (major heading and subheading only) for a project management plan to create a Web Site for your class, and then fill in the details for the introduction or overview section. Assume that this Web site would include home page with links to a syllabus for the class, lecture notes or other instructional information, links to the Web site for the books that we are using in the class, links to other Web sites and all links to personal pages for each member of your class and future classmates. Also, include a bulletin board and chat room feature where students and the instructor can exchange information. Assume your instructor is the project’s sponsor, you are the project manager, your classmates are your project team and you have three months to complete the project.

They will also become updated on how the class interaction is going on. Through the different links on the homepage students are free to access according to their purpose such as links for browsing syllabus for a class, lecture note and other instructional information.

a. What do you think the real problem was in this case?
The problem in Nick’s situation was having difficulty on his new position as a Project Manager. He should make adjustment in order to acquire the role of it. He did succeed and solve the problem but he didn’t follow the role or responsibilities of being a project manager, he act as software integrator w/c is his position before and it is the reason why the CEO complained.
b. Does the case present a realistic scenario? Why or why not?
Yes, because in Nick’s case he find solution in a way he was comfortable with, as newly hired Project Manager it’s not easy for him to cope up immediately with his new position so it happens that he used the strategies of being a Software Developer w/c was his position before so it seems that he disregards his roles as a recent project manager.
c. Was Nick Carson a good project manager? Why or why not?
Yes, because although he doesn’t follow the role of being a Project Manager he succeeded with his task using other strategies w/c helps him most.
d. What should top management have done to help Nick?
The top manager should orient and guide Nick for what is the best way to be done like focusing on all aspect of project and he have to understand Nick’s situation as a beginner. He has to remind him every step what the Project Manager should do because as the times goes by he will already adopt the role of it.
e. What could Nick have done to be a better project manager?
He has to improve both the skills he have w/c can help him more in solving problem. He also need to practice on focusing on all aspect of project management asking advice to his co- Project Manager could also help him.
