Fantastic work! There’s an interesting shift happening in this space away from the two-step method in some contexts — particularly in areas where collecting that information isn’t actually necessary. In the spaces I work in we’re seeing concerns that the method — while absolutely well-intentioned — is being used to capture information about gender that people don’t want shared! Specifically that folk who otherwise wouldn’t self-identify as trans or gender diverse on a form (especially ones collected by government) feel like they’re being forced into providing this information. The shift we’re seeing is a heightened awareness of a) making sure the information you’re collecting is actually necessary and b) respecting people’s right to self-determination and self-identification — even in contexts where we’re trying to collect population-level data about trans and gender diverse folk.
