If you are spending your summer holidays in Maastricht, there is no reason to be sad. Maastricht offers a variety of beautiful sights and landmarks to explore during the summer.

When you arrive in Maastricht already in August, why not use this extra time to get familiar with your future home and the surroundings?

Here are some insider tips on what you can do in Maastricht in August:

1. GET TO KNOW MAASTRICHT

Wander around the city and explore the small alleys and shops. Take a walk along or on top of the city wall, walk through ‘Hell Gate’ or relax at the river banks with a cold drink in your hand. You will notice that Maastricht is a great place to spend the next year of your life.

If you feel like actually learning more about the history of Maastricht and the culture, join a Maastricht free walking tour. Every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday the tour leaves from Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and shows you Maastricht’s secrets on a two hour tour.

To dive deep into Maastricht’s culture and lifestyle visit the Boekhandel Dominicanen. It is a wonderful bookshop with also English books ranging from non-fictional to fictional books over magazines. The extraordinary part is that it is placed in a church right next to the Vrijthof. The combination of being in an old church and a book shop offers a unique atmosphere that you shouldn’t miss!

Afterwards cross the Vrijthof and enter the churches. You can get an amazing view when climbing the tower of the red St. Janskerk. Of course there is also always time for a walk along the shopping street. Next to the big fashion chains, Maastricht also offers multiple small fashion boutiques.

Of course this is not an exhaustive lists of sights and landmarks in Maastricht but a good starting point to get to know the city.

2. GET TO KNOW THE SURROUNDINGS

Another great way to get to know a different perspective of Maastricht is when you take a Maastricht cruise. Join a boat tour and explore Maastricht’s surroundings.

What you cannot miss when living in Maastricht is the small town of Valkenburg. Located 20mins from the cite, Valkenburg has a great deal to offer including a world renowned thermal spa (Thermae 2000), two theme parks, a toboggan run and a series of underground caverns.

Furthermore, the town boasts the highest castle ruins in the country and a great host of bars and restaurants and beautiful surrounding landscapes. A big range of restaurants and bars take care of your culinary needs.

3. JOIN INKOM

Last but not least you should not miss the opportunity to join the INKOM. During the INKOM week Maastricht is the place to be for prospective and current students and introduces you well to the city, the different fraternities, fellow students, parties and spots to relax. Save the last week in August to take part in the INKOM and celebrate before university starts in the beginning of September.
