Excellent article. I’ve enjoyed noir in classic movies more than I have in books, for some reason. I think that’s because, when reading, I’m looking for a different experience — something more than just entertainment. And, most classic noir did not, as the author points out, include characters that truly moved me. So, I, too, like the author, want to see modern noir push the boundaries by addressing sexism, racism, diversity, and so on. This is a genre, with its particular tropes, that should easily tackle all of these in interesting ways and with distinctive characters. That said, let’s hope we don’t simply get new caricatures/stereotypes instead.
