I’m from South Africa originally and I completely understand what you’re saying about an entrenched belief system. I was a young adult before I realised that what the whites in South Africa were voting for was almost as bad as slavery….. and they really believed they were doing the right thing. Apart from that, we were also denied any news about what was going on in our own country and because separation was absolute to all intents and purposes, there was very little “first hand” witnessing of the oppression. I think it’s a terrible shame that parents (anywhere in the world) don’t respect their children’s integrity enough to encourage them to grow up with the ability to think for themselves about racism, hatred, religion, etc. What a superb thing it is to have grown up kids who can challenge your belief system and teach you stuff!!!
