Bowie is one of my favourite artists. I love him so much that I have a lightning bolt tattoo, gotten after my first solo visit to Berlin. Yes, it has been mistaken for a Flash Gordon tattoo and no, I don’t mind.

I first “met” David (Zavid) Bowie watching Labyrinth (1986) and like many other young girls I imagine, I had a major crush. To this day I’ll never understand why Sarah turned him down. “Just love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.”, Jareth says, to which the appropriate response is YES.

David has been…

Dear Video Games,The majority of our relationship has been awash with the Final Fantasy series. For the fellow gamers out there, that’s I, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XIII, XIII-2 & XIV, and no, my favourite isnt VII.

Our first encounter unfortunately resulted in an early breakup, when my parents sold our Sega Megadrive as punishment for my brother and I continuously fighting over who got to play Sonic the Hedgehog, Toejam and Earl, and Echo the Dolphin (with rage inducing jellyfish).

It was not long before our next dalliance, in the form of a hand-me-down Amiga — and I…

Hipster sexism is all based around the idea of self-aware misogyny. The objectification of women, by both men and women who know the implications of sexism — know what it means to be a misogynist, but do it anyway because “they’re only joking”.

It’s mock sexism; a paradox. Whilst traditional sexism is aggressive, ignorant and transparent; hipster sexism is tongue-in-cheek.

The men who partake in hipster sexism are ‘left-leaning and supposedly enlightened men, gay and straight, who call their female friends sluts and skanks — but do it with irony.’ (Kamm, 2013).

The term ‘hipster sexism’ itself stems from the…

Clearly, the act of remembering the countless millions of Holocaust deaths is without question, vital. Today, I would like to tell you about the life of just one woman.

The enormity of the Holocaust overwhelms our ability to bring the horror home to a concept we can easily relate to. So by remembering Charlotte Salomon’s life, it might just be possible to bring her out of the overwhelming number and into our thoughts as the gifted artist she truly was.

Born in April 1917, Charlotte lived in a cultured world during the fragile years of the Weimar Republic, Berlin. After…

This post originally featured on KQ Magazine, which I co-ran. I have edited my original post for clarity.

Pac-Man, one of the highest grossing video games in history as well as one of the most famous, turns 35 today (edit: May 21)! Here I pay tribute to the rise, fall and resurrection of video games.

Compared to our highly intelligent and graphically beautiful games of today, Pac-Man might seem elementary but it is more complex than you might initially think, for example, the characters all had names and personalities. We have affection for games like Pac-Man because they have become…

Relaxing music for the lucky listeners at work. If you need to get stuff done and stay calm, this is the playlist for you.

I’m lucky enough to be able to play whatever music I like and at whatever volume I like because I work from home, but I have also worked in offices where headphones are allowed. In any case, though I love a bit of electro if I’m in a rush, if I really need to concentrate I love sticking on some chilled out music at high volume. These are my top ten tunes for that very occasion.

Battlestar Galactica is one of the most underrated sci-fi TV shows of our time.

You don’t have to be a sci-fi nerd to watch BSG, but it helps. From the first episode, which aired 10 years ago this last January, you’re hopelessly addicted. The plotline, which brilliantly and intricately unfolds throughout its 4 seasons will have you gasping, laughing, fist-pumping, will leave you perplexed and finally, astounded. It’s funny, because when I double checked the number of seasons — I was in disbelief. A show with so much packed in only has 4 seasons?!

It has been said that the…

You may recognise Lauren Mayberry as the sweet-voiced vocalist (and additional synthesisers) from the gorgeously emotive electro band Chvrches (how unnatural does it feel to write it like that?) who formed not so long go in 2011 after several months of writing and recording in Glasgow. As an internet marketer, I absolutely and geekily love that they used the roman “v” to distinguish themselves from “churches” on internet searches — never let your artistic integrity get in the way of your SEO.

I was first introduced to the band via the track Recover, which I immediately fell in love with…

Today is the last day of International Women’s Month, and I like to celebrate the everyday strength as well as the celebrities and public figures we admire.

I have something very special to share with you today; the story of a strong woman in wartime Britain, written by her 80 year old daughter. The stories of individual women in our own immediate history are something we ought to remember — and we should celebrate the women we come from. So to mark the end of the month-long international celebrations of women, let’s take a moment to learn about one individual.

It was hard to choose, but I’ve narrowed it down to 11.

Unless you don’t know what hair metal means, it’s a term that refers to a particular genre of awesome metal, particularly, but not limited to, the 80s.

It’s also often referred to as sleaze metal or glam metal. Think tight, leopard-print lycra, many many belts, ripped t-shirts, colourful make-up, bandanas and as much hairspray as possible. Mix this into a gorgeous hot-pot of sex, drugs, rock n roll and the best dude duck-faces (y’all just badly imitating, IMO) and you have hair metal. …
