Well, it follows from the premises people hold. If the MSM tells people that words are violence, and that microaggressions are words, and that skin color itself is a microaggression, it’s not hard to jump to “he’s white, which is a microaggression, which are like violent words, which means he’s violent, so I can punch him and it’s only self defense”.
What needs to be clearly stated is that words are not violence, free speech is for exactly the speech we find unacceptable, and that violence in response to speech is both legally and morally wrong. Charlottesville violence could have been ended in the first ten minutes if the cops had arrested the first 20 guys who started fighting, regardless of which side they were on. When there are consequences for violence, people will avoid it. When the mob is allowed to run free, without consequences, their flawed premises plus their lack of inhibition leads to bloodshed.
I guess the bottom line is that if I saw some #ShariaSupportingMuslim waving a sign that said “I will kill all infidels”, and he was attacked by a mob of people wearing MAGA hats, I’d intervene against the attackers, the same way as if I saw some #WhiteNaziCrusader waving a sign that said “I will kill all coloreds” who was attacked by a mob of hooded antifa. Regardless of my disdain for both sign wavers, it is of supreme importance that we preserve the freedom of speech that so much blood has already been spilt for.
