Well said. I think something that gets lost in the simplification of history is the painting of people with incredibly broad brushes. Not every Confederate soldier supported slavery. Not every Union soldier opposed slavery. Good and evil could be found on both sides. The stories of the Civil War are so much more complex and nuanced than “The War of Northern Aggression” or “The War to Free The Slaves”. And the most important story of all wasn’t about the battles that were fought, but the peace that was navigated afterwards.
Reconciliation wasn’t easy, and Reconstruction led to some pretty horrific abuses with Jim Crow and the Democrat militia wing called the KKK. But the arc of history from the Civil War to our indispensable intervention in WWII arguably showed that as a country, not only could we save ourselves, but we could save the world.
And tomorrow, America will be even greater :)
