I think we’ve all heard of Papers Please, a small indie game developed by a man named Lucas Pope, in 2013. The game takes place in what is at first glance, Soviet Russia in the year of November 1982. In the game, you play as a Border Inspector going through migrants documents. The game can have a huge impact on how you feel about the world as it has many phycological elements that make it what it is. For example on day 26, a young women named Elisa Katsenja will arrive and present a passport, but many missing documents. You could just deny her entry, but her lost love “Sergiu” is waiting for her on the other side. Do you let her pass and risk getting a citation which could make you loose more money? Or do you deny her to save your family? These are the types of situations Papers Please puts you through which could, again, alter the way to look at the world of jobs, and careers. Especially those of Border Inspectors.

INSPIRATION

Papers Please inspiration for being developed is the creator mentioned before, Lucas Pope, was going through airport security on many different immigration trips. He had made many other games in the past like, Mars after Midnight, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Republia Times, and many others created more in the late 1900’s, to early 2000’s. One of his past games that had MUCH inspiration for Papers Please was The Republia Times. As you may know, in the fictional world of which Arstotzka takes place, there is another country called “Republia”. This is where obviously The Republia Times take place. In the game, you have a certain amount of time to basically create a news paper article on what’s going on in Republia. In my opinion, it is a very fun game, with a good plot. I recommend to all of you reading this to 100% play it. Anyways, since this game was pretty popular amongst the community, Lucas decided to make Papers Please. He kept in Republia as a little call back to his previous game title. As shown below.
