The One Thing You Should Do in 2014

Your Guide to Effective Resolutions

A new year begins this week and you know what that means. Another new year, another fresh start. It’s time to change our calendars and perhaps, change ourselves. All the standard clichés apply.

Then again, all ironic detachment aside, New Years does have some element of magic involved, does it not? There is nothing more sought after on this planet than the freedom of new beginnings. Like children all over the world go to sleep on Christmas Eve hoping that their good deeds will bring them presents, all the adults go to bed (or perhaps more accurately pass out) in hopes that their good thoughts and self promises will bring them fortune and good tidings in the coming year. It’s a mutual delusion but it’s one we all participate in. For some the changing of the year is enough of a catalyst to inspire necessary action. For most the feeling passes and familiar habits settle in. It’s not until the harsh reality of mid-to-late January that the truth settles in. Change, that is real change, is indifferent to the calendar. Change is a result of actions, not promises.

In making your resolutions this year dear friends, be sure to have a plan of how to keep them. Be realistic. This is an exercise in self-improvement, not fantasy. Be specific. Nothing is easier to lose track of than a vague ambition. It might help to have a consequence for not meeting your goals (self-hatred doesn't count, you’re too used to that). Ensure you can meet your goals and you will find success.

2014 is on its way. May it bring you all the love, joy and happiness you desire.
