Debut: A Real Life Fairytale Experience
“Last Saturday night was a very special night for me as I celebrated my 18th or should I say my legality as a young lady.? Above all, I want to thank our almighty God for showering me blessings in life. To my Mom, to my Dad, thank you for everything you have done not only that night but also over the years you take care of me and guide me.” -Your most loving daughter.
Girls sometimes talk about their wedding day. On what will be their dress like, how many people will be invited or how long they have to wait for their wedding day? Of course, there will be a lot of flowers, messages, tears and etc. for her to feel like she is a real queen. But in the Philippines, girls don’t have to wait for long because of the celebration called “debut”. This is a very special day for every girl as this also happens once in a life. It is one of those occasions that makes a girl’s life complete.
Just like a wedding day, there will be a lot of flowers, tears and messages too, but the only thing that is missing in debut is the groom. Debut is being held on the 18th birthday of a girl. On this day, the debutant is also dressed with a very beautiful gown or dress. And what makes debut very special for girls? It is because, the debutant feels like she is a princess on that night.
Debut is a very big occasion or event that can also be planned for months. Family, friends, classmates, etc., will be invited and a lot will participate. One of these are the 18 candles, 18 roses and 18 treasures. Each must have 18 participants because it’s the debutante’s 18th birthday.
“Every girls needs someone to guide her and nurture her in her way to becoming a better person in the future. They will be the one who will light the debutante’s way to catch her dream and to obtain her goals in her life.” These are the candles. They are the friends and family of the debutant that gives her messages of love and comfort and advice that she can use in her life. Before giving each candle’s messages, they must first light the candles they are holding from a candle being held by the debutant that is already lit, then they can deliver their messages.
“Flowers will bloom at the right time, and as the most wonderful and beautiful butterfly, many will try to attract her.” These are the roses. The roses represents the symbol of courtship and readiness in romance. The 18 roses holds a rose and must dance with the the debutant. But in the roses, there’s a rule, the first man to dance her must be her father to show that the greatest man in her life will always be there to support and protect her. By this, the debutant will be considered both beautiful and “thorny.”
“Lot of blessings will be given to you and we hope that you will use this gifts from us and it will give you happiness.” These are the treasures. Each treasure will give something that they think of something that the debutant can use in her everyday life. They must not say exactly what is inside the paper bag but to just give clues about the gift they will give.
There are still a lot of other eighteens that the debutant can add but 18 candles, 18 roses and the 18 treasures are the most important. 18 blue bills who will give her money, 18 balloons composed of children carrying balloon each, and 18 toast to celebrate her birthday are another examples of it.
To be a princess in one night? It’s already more than enough. Debut can be simple but elegant or something that is unique. But still, It’s not the flowers, designs, dancing, gifts, tears and messages that gives happiness to the debutant. To see the smiles in every visitors and participants that came to witness the debutant turning into better woman and the happiness that brought by this event, to be with her family, friends and love one’s, It’s a one in a life time experience that truly matters and makes the debutante’s heart full of joy.
