How Well Do You Know Yourself?

Know Thyself.

These words permeate through a book that some revere, and some condemn. These words point to something so unmeasurable and illusive in our effeciency-forward world.

Getting to know yourself isnt something that is built into being a human. Just because you are a person in a body doesnt mean you know the slightest thing about who you really are.

What do you know about yourself? Maybe you know when you usually like to go to bed, you know how clean or messy you are, you know what type of food you like, you know all these things about your physical self, but what about your mind? What about your true essence?

Do you know what you believe? Do you know what you are afraid of? Do you know what leaves you ecstatic? Do you know your tendencies? Do you know your vices?

I know that if I procrastinate I probably wont really care about the task as much as if I actually just start. So whenever I start procrastinating its like an alarm clock in my head that I know what happens when I go down this road, so its probably best to start that shit now if I want to have the outcome I prefer.

Procrastination can also be a red light in my life that I need to get into the right head space. Sometimes I dont procrastinate because I dont feel like doing something, I procrastinate because if I were to start now the product would probably be shitty because I dont feel the inspiration. So in this example its better to wait for the inspiration.

The point is I know these things about myself and I have gotten pretty good at sniffing out what is what. The funniest part about all of this, is no matter how well you think you know yourself, you can always go further, go deeper, and be more intimate than you have ever been with yourself. So knowing yourself isnt for the purpose of calculating life to work in your favor, its really just an anti-self-bullshit calibrator so you can stop playing victim to your “limitations.”

When you learn how to stop bullshitting yourself, life becomes much more simple.

The more time you spend getting to know yourself as you would get to know another, the more you are aligned with your own inner alchemy and you mold the universe to you rather than the other way around.

How do you know if you know yourself?

When you know yourself so well, that every second surprises you.

If you are lost in the sea of you, everything is predictable. You are just going through the motions. When you are familiar with someone but you dont really know them, they are relatively predictable. Same goes with yourself.

Getting to really know yourself is really what this journey is about, for self-(re)discovery.

The more you know yourself, the more you understand your tendencies, your beliefs, and everything in between, the more you can work and succeed with the tools and gifts you have, rather than “dealing” through life wishing you were played a different hand.

So how do you get to know yourself? Spend quality time with you and only you once a week. Take a walk, a hike, meditate, something for an hour once a week by yourself. Set an intention to get to know yourself better and really the rest is taken care for you.

Knowing yourself might just be the secret to life. If by the end of your life you can say that you lived a life that was true to who you are, and you can fully believe that because you know your truth, you know who you show up as and you own it all. Why do you own it all? Because maybe the more you get to know yourself the more you start feeling like you wouldnt change a damn thing about you.

Look within. You might just fall in love with what you find.
