A look back at your LAFD — May 16–23
This week, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to 8,467 incidents, a 2.5% jump from the same point last year. Emergency Medical Service (EMS) transports totaled 4,123, a 3% jump from 2014. There was a major gas leak, a brush fire in the San Fernando Valley and we helped #FilltheBoot.
Here are the week’s major incidents
Saturday, May 16: LAFD units were dispatched to a reported gas leak at 1776 N. Cahuenga Ave. at approximately 11:30 a.m. Arriving units found a 6” line that had been struck by a utility crew. An approximately four-block area was then evacuated as a precaution and units staged to provide fire suppression and EMS support, if necessary. SoCal Gas and LADWP representatives responded to the unified command post with LAFD and LAPD. Approximately 100 residents were displaced and shelter was provided at a Recreation and Parks facility, with assistance from the American Red Cross. After a trench and shoring operation, the gas was shut off in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 17 and residents were allowed to re-house shortly thereafter. There were no injuries reported. (FS 27)

Tuesday, May 19: Units responded to a multi-vehicle accident on the northbound 2 Freeway at York Blvd. At least one patient was extricated and three patients were transported, with one in full arrest. The 2 Freeway was closed during the extrication due to safety concerns. (FS 55)
Wednesday, May 20: LAFD resources were dispatched at 1:19 p.m. to a reported brush fire at La Tuna Canyon and Elben. Arriving units found a three acre fire with a spot fire running ahead. A unified command was established with LAFD, LACoFD and the USFS. At the same time, a second fire was reported five miles away in the Hansen Dam area. That fire response was merged with the La Tuna incident and 31 LAFD fire companies were assigned to both incidents, along with mutual aid assets. Aggressive air and land fire attack, coupled with smooth mutual aid coordination kept both fires in check. The La Tuna fire was limited to five acres and the Hansen Dam blaze to two. There were no injuries and no structure damage at either fire. (FS 77) (FS 98)

Wednesday, May 20: A reported scaffolding collapse brought LAFD units to a construction site at Olive and Olympic Blvd. at 7:12 p.m. Six workers suffered minor injuries when a second-floor scaffold collapsed during concrete pouring operations. All six workers were transported by LAFD RA’s for evaluation of their injuries. Cal-OSHA was notified and will conduct the investigation. (FS 10)
