I believe this mentality plays a part in the diversity problems in Bay Area tech offices. With work expectations beyond 45–55 hours, an employee cannot have any person in his or her life be dependent on them in any way. People with kids are immediately disadvantaged. People who have extended families that are financially interdependent are immediately disadvantaged. Those whose families don’t rely on them beyond social obligations are the only people who can compete or succeed in that setting.
