Right In Front of You

Sometimes what you are looking for is right there…

While I was mowing the lawn today, I ran into a bit of a snag.

Bees.

I mowed over some wild flowers and I stirred up a bunch of big, fat bees. And they were mad. They started flying all over the place and coming after me.

And not being in a mood to get stung by bees today, I took a break from mowing. I decided that I would get some dinner and wait until later in the evening, when the bees were done doing their business.

I ate a burger and when I got home, the bees were still too busy for me to really do any mowing. So I decided I would take a walk.

I have had a very stressful week and a half. My grandfather passed away a little over a week ago and his funeral was last Wednesday. I have basically been running non stop since then. So the walk served a couple of purposes. Besides being a good way to pass an hour or so while the bees finished pollinating, it also gave me a moment to reflect and relax. I could look at the world around me and hear the sounds and see what nature has been up to while I have been so distracted.

I walked down the street to a nearby park and started to wander a bit into the woods and I noticed that so much life is beginning to show. Plants are waking up from their winter naps and the colors have shifted from grays and browns to bright greens and purples and yellows.

And as I looked closer at what was around me, I saw the end of a tree branch waking up with new life. It was absolutely beautiful and I wanted to take a picture. So I pulled my phone out of my pocket and proceeded to take a picture.

And another.

And another.

And another.

None of them were turning out right. My phone refused to focus on what I wanted the picture of. The beauty right there was blurry as my phone attempted to focus on everything in the background.

I started deleting every shot and then I stopped on one and stared at it for a moment.

My phone camera was missing what was right in front of the lens and capturing everything in the background.

What if whatever it is that you are looking for is right in front of you, but you are so worried about whatever else and you are focused on everything in the background and missing the beauty that is right there?

Because sometimes what we are seeking is out of focus because it is in front of us. Maybe we are standing a bit too close or maybe it is just not what we were expecting.

But it is what we need.

Maybe we need to take a moment, step back, and look at what is right there. Focus on what is close at hand.

And take the risk.

And go after what we need, instead of what we want.
