This is not to discount the work and influence of studio potters such as Bernard Leach. Leach after all opened the forum for studio pottery to be appreciated but Rie took what could have been an austere view of functionalism and made it poetic. Pottery may be one of the last mediums to be regarded in the mainstream as a truly modern medium. Rie herself described as “quite simply a potter” said she wished more people would make simple pots instead of trying to be artists. Moving towards simplicity and humility and away from ostentation and pretentiousness — that’s a revolution I can become a part of.
