There are things the government could do to actually reduce the cost of health care here in the US. Unfortunately Republicans have no interest in doing any of them. Major reason is that anything that reduces the cost of health care also reduces the incomes of health care providers at least to some extent. So the AMA’s lobbyists would be having “serious talks” with those Representatives and Senators who would be responsible for any changes.

We saw this in action when the Clinton Health Plan of 1993 was offered to Congress. The US health care industry spent large sums of money defeating it. The same thing would hold true today with any proposed legislation that would reduce the flow of money into the pockets of the health care industry.
