For this activity we used “the Tarot Cards of Tech” to brainstorm the implications and unintended consequences of our midterm on our users.

Card 1: The Siren

“What would using your product ‘ too much’ look like?”

“How does your product encourage users to engage, and how does it make it easy to disconnect?”

For these questions we thought about how we could further fine tune user interaction with our product. In terms of disconnection we thought about what contexts would our midterm need to be in in order to be fully understood and actualized. We also thought about how to make users slow down and enjoy the process rather then rush through and miss the point which is to cultivate intercultural knowledge, legacy, and relationships. We want our product to be used for it’s conceptual purpose rather then be used as technology for technology’s sake.

Card 2: The Big Bad Wolf

“What could a bad actor do with your product?”

“What would predatory and exploitative behavior look like with your product?”

“What product features are most vulnerable to manipulate?”

First to define what a “bad actor” is, we thought of a persona who would be the most disruptive to our product’s experience. We decided a “bad actor” is someone who dominates and controls the group dynamic. As group flow is essential for our project, we thought about how to set up the group dynamic for users as equals- that is how to define and encourage collaboration within the user group. To do this we explored different ideas of using movement and placement as a way to maintain and nurture “equal” dynamics within the group.

Overall Thoughts:

We realized some of our weaker points in our project and this activity helped us give further direction to where we wanted to go with our project. We determined that we need defined roles in our user interaction. For our project, we previously did a lot of brainstorming around our topic and concept, so these activities are helpful in solidifying any questions or raising areas that we did not previously consider.
