MODEL/SCALE

Two libraries at Jussieu, Paris by OMA

This is one of OMA work at Jussieu Paris on 1992. He redesigned Albert’s work (the first designer) or can say he redesigned Jussieu library to be more attractive. His technique is ‘slabs and columns and spatial loops’. He uses this technique to make the unusual library from private space become public space. Usually, the library has characteristic of quiet, silent and private but he changed it become open space or public space. For example, people who use the library in level 5 can see another activity in above or below level. I tried to redesign UTS library using his technique which is slabs, and columns and spatial loops. Before I built the final model, I made 5 iterations using a cheap material such as paper and card then I used bass wood as my final material.

First iteration
Second iteration
Third iteration
Fourth iteration
Fifth iteration

There are some my iterations to redesign UTS library. In the first iteration, I experienced how to make a slabs using paper color. In the second and third iterations, i learned how to make columns and spatial loops. In the fourth iteration, I tried to put more columns and used unusual shape such as diagonal. In the last iteration, I experienced to use bass wood on the small scale before I make the big one. And there is my final model, I used bass wood as my material and I follow OMA technique such as slabs and columns and spatial loops. And also I changed the private UTS library become public UTS library.
