I didn’t know there was so much to clapping until I read that. It was simpler with the old to heart or not to heart. I clap as much to the algorithm as the writer. I look at it as recommending something to the public. I highlight and respond for the same reason. I think all of it affects the pay.

I just clap the way something makes me feel.
Here’s my scale:
People who read and clap for my stuff, go on a list. Then, I search for their stuff on New From Your Network. I go through the list, bookmark the new stuff and read it in a sitting. Rinse and repeat the next time I hit Medium.
50 if it moves my thingymabob.
40 if it’s great
30 if it’s good
21 for a’ight
5 — 15 for responses
Anything less than 5 = shit-posting (You wasted my fucking time! I’ve read better on 4chan /b/.)

I’ve always read everything I opened, but now, I remember those who remember me and read slower. I try to give it the Medium-Time posted.
Even reading slower, my New From Your Network system actually saves me a lot of time. I’ve never heard of 99.9999999% of the people Medium puts in my feed. I no longer get eye-strain looking for a needle in a haystack.
