I’ll bet that very recently you traveled somewhere in a car when you could have walked or biked. Americans are very attached to the convenience and luxury of cars. In 2019, there were 284.5 million registered vehicles in the U.S., and it is projected there will be 287.3 by the end of 2020 (“U.S. Vehicle”). These vehicles are having a dangerously negative effect on human health and the health of the planet, and as a society, we must commit to much less driving.

Climate change is a crisis. A leading factor of climate change is greenhouse gasses, which trap heat and make the planet warmer. Transportation generates the largest amount of greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from burning fossil fuels to power vehicles. In 2018, transportation was responsible for 28% of greenhouse gas emissions. Within the transportation sector, passenger cars are the largest source of emissions, which includes SUVs, pickups, and minivans (“Sources”). …
