Arista Records Album Discography, Part 2: The 9500 Series
The 9500 series originally started as a vehicle for movie soundtracks; in 1979, at about 9503, it became a vehicle for albums that the label felt were guaranteed to sell (i.e. from its best-selling artists). By 1981, however, this had displaced the 4000 series as the main catalog lineup.
The first two album in this series were originally pressed with the 1977 black label.
At 9502, this changed to either variation of the multi-colored label with cascading As.
Around the time of Arista’s acquisition by Bertelsmann, the new owners decided to have the label abandon EMI for international distribution in favor of other record companies. Arista’s international releases would now be distributed by Ariola (Bertelsmann’s main label) in countries where that label operated (Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Mexico, Brazil). However, Bertelsmann would not be a truly worldwide music company until its 1986 merger with RCA Records; for the time before RCA bought half of the label, Arista’s titles would also be distributed by a slew of other companies, including CGD Messaggerie Musicali SPA (Italy), Microfon Argentina S.A. (Argentina), Vicor Music Corporation (the Phillippines), PolyGram (Portugal, Japan), and Festival (Australia, New Zealand).
