Arista Records Album Discography, Part 3: The 8000 Series

After RCA bought a 50% stake in Arista Records, that company decided to do a total overhaul of its numbering system, going to the 8000 series for a long while afterward. These normally used 8 in the traditional AL prefix; to make room for this additional number, cassettes from Arista lost the T in the prefix. Some titles (mainly those from the midline part of the company) had “6” in the prefix on jackets, but usually retained the “8” on the actual label.

Several of the earlier titles in this series were reissues of Arista’s earlier albums, and quite a number of them seem to be designed for the burgeoning CD market; these used an ARCD prefix. Reissues of vinyl LPs using newer catalog numbers usually recycled older LP jackets with the newer catalog number being pasted over the one originally assigned to the reissued LP (a la MCA).

Prior to 1988, Arista distributed the Jive label in the U.S.; these titles used “J” in place of “A” in the same prefixes.

Albums until January 1984 used the June 1979 multi-colored label with cascading As and the Arista name in the same font as the As.

In January 1984, Arista debuted a new black label with a background resembling a mountainous landscape at sunset and featuring the Arista name in front of the sunset; the text on the rest of the label appeared in a Eurostile font, as did a text ring that read “Manufactured by Arista Records, Inc., 6 W 57th St., N.Y., N.Y. 10019”.

Early Arista CDs used a silver disc with the Arista logo to the left of the label. This was actually similar to the label used on MCA CDs from the period. Early Arista CDs were pressed in Japan for the U.S. market; those that were had text to the right reading “Manufactured in Japan for Arista Records, Inc., 6 West 57th Street, New York, N.Y. 10019. All rights reserved. Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws.” Some of the CDs on this page were eventually reprinted in the U.S. with the same catalog numbers when the first U.S. plants opened in 1987; the text was largely unaltered, save for a replacement of “Japan” with “U.S.A.”.
