J Records Story and Albums Discography

Clive Davis formed J Records after his departure from Arista in 2000. Though it lasted a decade, it is forever identified with the discovery of stars like Alicia Keys and Angie Stone and the rediscoveries of Luther Vandross and Rod Stewart.

In 2000, record executive Clive Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer; around this point, he ended his tenure as the long-time head of Arista Records. He had in turn been running the label for the part of his life that followed his being fired from Columbia Records in 1973. Still seeking activity in the record business, he received $150 million in financing from BMG to form a second label, J. The J name came from his middle initial and that of his children. J Records was distributed by BMG, but that company’s name was originally only seen on the label’s albums outside of the United States. J recorded pop, R&B, jazz, rock, metal, hip-hop and rap.

Olivia’s nickname stems from her being the first artist signed to the label. (Photo credit: MTV Networks, a Programming Service of Viacom International, Inc.)

The first artist J signed was a young Brooklynite named Olivia Theresa Longott. Her name shortened to Olivia, she was nicknamed “the First Lady of J.” Her first album, released in May, mixed sexuality and romance, soft R&B and hard hip-hop. She did a huge promotion for the CD and cassette of her self-titled debut, including television appearances, live shows, and a tour. It nearly worked, mind you. “Bizounce”, one of the three singles from the record, hit #15 pop and #4 R&B, but the album, despite being a top-30 R&B seller, stalled at #55 on the pop end. She then was abruptly dropped from the label. Olivia later accused Davis of attempting to groom her as someone with a bad girl image; he has denied the charge. The single and album were the only items that charted in her career, but she contributed vocals to 50 Cent’s song “Candy Shop” and was a cast member on VH1’S LOVE & HIP HOP: NEW YORK for its first rhree seasons.

O-Town aspired to be the most ambitious boy band of all time, but their ambitions went nowhere. (Photo credit: Amazon)

In 2000, the year J was founded, MTV produced a reality show called MAKING THE BAND, from which came J’s next big act, a boy band from Orlando, Florida who went by the name of O-Town. Their self-titled album [80813–20000–2/4] featured a #1 hit that didn’t make the Airplay chart but made the Singles one: “Liquid Dreams.” (It also hit #10 on the overall Hot 100.) Their next records, “All or Nothing” and “We Fit Together” (the latter featured on the soundtrack of DR. DOLITTLE 2) were similar successes, the latter was more or less one, but as the group’s novelty value wore off, O-Town sought to be the most ambitious of all boy bands. They wanted to write their own songs, they wanted to gain the respect of their industry peers, and they ESPECIALLY wanted to shake off that “boy band” image had by similar teen pop acts of their time. They tried, and they tried, but they just couldn’t pull it off. The long-delayed O2 (80813–20033–2/4) performed well below any reasonably high form of expectation the group must have had. In November 2003, O-Town was dropped by the label and the group broke up shortly thereafter, citing both the changing climate of the music business (boy bands and other bubblegum pop types were slowly fading into the history book) and some financial troubles, hinting that they may have been caused by Lou Pearlman, whose Trans Continental Records had previously been sued by Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, and Aaron Carter over the financial agony which he had caused them. (Pearlman would ultimately draw a 25-year prison sentence for many felony convictions; he died in prison in 2016, and was the subject of the 2019 documentary titled THE BOY BAND CON, which is available for free viewing via YouTube.)

Singer Alicia Keys was J’s best selling artist. (Photo courtesy: Sony Music Entertainment)

It was in the early summer of 2001 that J happened upon its first multi-platinum album, SONGS IN A MINOR, as recorded by Alicia Keys. Keys, another native New Yorker, began writing songs for the album (80813–20002–2/4) at the age of fourteen years old, and started recording the album for Columbia in 1998. It was after Columbia rejected the results that she made a deal with Arista, with the album being taken over by J after the latter was formed. The widely-acclaimed album, a fusion of R&B, soul, jazz, hip-hop, blues, gospel and classical music, explored many stages of personal relationships. It took off like a comet, selling 236,000 copies in its first week alone, and 12 million around the world by the year 2008. Keys would become J’s biggest act by far, her next three albums each doing better than the other in terms of sales figures (and, more or less, among critics).

Angie Stone was another of J’s R&B superstars. (Photo credit: Soulworks)

Another big star on J was a South Carolina native by the name of Angie Stone. In the late 1970s, she was part of a hip-hop trio called the Sequence, then worked with futuristic rappers Mantronix and singer Lenny Kravitz, and had just recorded her first solo album, 1999’s BLACK DIAMOND [Arista 07822–19092–2/4], which had spawned a #1 R&B hit in “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”. Having followed Clive Davis to J, Stone’s next album, MAHOGANY SOUL [80813–20013–2] also went Gold and spawned the #1 Dance Club hit “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”, which also made it to #39 on the R&B end; its response on the pop charts (#79) was more tepid. After briefly going Hollywood (having starred in the 2002 Rob Schneider comedy THE HOT CHICK), she came out with another album on June 28, 2004: STONE LOVE [82876 56215 1/2] made it to #14 on the Hot 200 with 53,000 copies sold in the first week, but its singles were less successful, save for a #1 Dance Club hit in “I Wanna Thank Ya (ft. Snoop Dogg)”. Stone left J for the Concord Music Group revival of Stax in 2007.

J also signed some long-established artists to the label, including Luther Vandross, Jamie Foxx, Monica, and Rod Stewart, in some cases becoming known as the master of the turnaround in the early 2000s.

Luther Vandross, on Epic, had been one of the top R&B singers in the U.S. since 1981, and was primarily an album artist, which was unusual to say the least for an R&B star. A specialist in combining original songs with revivals of those that had been hits for others but were retailored to suit his particular style, in 1994, he encountered international album success with SONGS [EK/ET 57775]. His 1996 album YOUR SECRET LOVE [EK/ET 67553] fared less well, and a 1998 one-off for Virgin [I KNOW, 7243 8 46089 2 7] only managed to muster a Gold certificate from the RIAA. On J, he would experience a major turnaround; his self-titled 2001 album [80813 20007–2/4] was his first top-5 R&B album hit in a while and returned the crooner to the top-10 on the Hot 200 Albums chart; the big hit off the album was “Take You Out”, which went to #7 on the R&B charts and #26 pop. Two years later, he found himself holding the top position on both the R&B and pop album charts for one time only with the record DANCE WITH MY FATHER [82876–51885–2/4], having a #4 Adult Contemporary hit with the title cut.

On April 16, 2003, two months before his second album on J was due, Luther Vandross had a severe stroke in his New York home which greatly affected both his singing and speaking abilities, and which made him wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life. After a nearly-two-month-long coma, Vandross accepted his Song of the Year Grammy for “Dance With My Father” via a pre-recorded video presentation at the 2004 ceremony; he made his final public appearance on a May 6, 2004 edition of the Oprah Winfrey show. He died of a heart attack on July 1, 2005 in Edison, New Jersey, aged 64. The next year, he had a posthumously released #10 Dance Club hit in the song “Shine”, which was an unused song composed for the film THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS.

Jamie Foxx decided to return to music after he won an Academy Award for his performance as Ray Charles; J was the label of choice for his second music career. (Photo credit: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences)

Jamie Foxx rose to fame as part of the cast for the Fox television sketch comedy series IN LIVING COLOR, which led to an album called PEEP THIS [Fox Music 07863–66436–2/4]. Dismissed at the time as yet another would-be musical excursion of a major television comedy star (it’s usually rare for such albums to actually make strong impressions on a music critic, unless the albums are from the likes of such as Ariana Grande) the album had since become a cult classic of the hip-hop world. Foxx spent the next few years perfecting his craft as an actor, appearing in such films as ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, ALI and COLLATERAL. In 2004, he won the Academy Award® for Best Actor for his performance as the legendary vocalist-instrumentalist Ray Charles in the singer’s posthumously released biopic RAY. Now with the credentials of having won an Oscar® for playing one of the most famous performers of the twentieth century, Foxx decided to take another chance at the music business in 2005, with the album UNPREDICTABLE [82876–71779–2], and the results yielded a double-Platinum blockbuster; the title track (featuring Ludacris) went into the Hot 100 top ten right away. He also appeared in a duet with Kanye West on “Gold Digger”, which topped the Pop and R&B charts upon its release on the Roc-A-Fella label. In between this album and the hit singls (“Blame It (ft. T-Pain)”) and album (INTUITION, 88697–41294–2) that followed, he appeared in such pictures as JARHEAD, MIAMI VICE and DREAMGIRLS, which all made him the most bankable star in Hollywood in that time.

Monica’s AFTER THE STORM was an immediate #1 U.S. album hit upon its release. (Photo credit: Amazon)

Monica, like Angie Stone, followed Clive Davis to J from Arista, where in 1998 she had had a huge hit with THE BOY IS MINE (both on album and on single). Her next album, ALL EYEZ ON ME, was centered on R&B dance tracks with much more of a singer-songwriter aspect put into them than most of the records of that type. Its release, however, only occurred in 2002 in Japan [BVCP-27026], with the CD being shelved in the U.S. due to its wide availability via online file-sharing and bootlegging run amok. One partial re-record later, Monica issued AFTER THE STORM [80813–20031–2] in 2003. The record quickly became a #1 hit on the Hot 200, and its single “So Gone” topped the R&B and Dance Club play charts, while going to #10 on the pop end. Her next albums, THE MAKINGS OF ME [82876–78960–2] and STILL STANDING [88697–40398–2], both went to #1 on the R&B album chart. She was the first artist to top the R&B singles chart over the span of three decades, and later became a contributor of the NBC reality competition series THE VOICE.

Rock superstar Rod Stewart (shown here in a 2005 photograph with his Hollywood Walk of Fame star) reinvented himself as an interpreter of songs from the Great American Songbook upon signing with J in 2002. (Photo credit: Kevork Djansezian, Associated Press)

Rod Stewart, of course, is one of the essential artists of the post-Beatles era of rock and roll, making a name for himself with both hard AND soft rock with a distinctly raspy voice carrying bluesy hard-stompers like “Maggie May”, new-age heart-thumpers like “Some Guys Have All the Luck”, the disco dance “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” and the slow ballad “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?” all at the same time. In the early 2000s, Rod Stewart had quit Warner Bros. for Atlantic; after a modest success with his album HUMAN [83411–2], Rod then moved on to J, where he decided to reinvent his image, becoming an interpreter of songs from the Great American Songbook. The first album in his series on the subject, IT HAD TO BE YOU [80813–20039–2], became an immediate hit upon its release, hitting #4 on the American charts, and #8 in his native England. Subsequent albums in Rod’s series — all hits on the Billboard Hot 200 — included AS TIME GOES BY [82876–55710–2], STARDUST [82876–62182–2, which won him his only Grammy award, for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album], THANKS FOR THE MEMORY [82876–69286–2] and FLY ME TO THE MOON [88697–77209–2]; he then applied a similar formula to albums featuring covers of hits (other than his own) from the classic rock era [STILL THE SAME…, 82876–82641–2] and of Motown types [SOULBOOK, 88697–30256–2]. Granted, Rod Stewart’s voice being applied to the old chestnuts might have taken some getting used to from some fans of the singer, but these albums, with some rather forgiving guest appearances from stars such as Cher, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Elton John among others, proved to be enough to ensure a permanent place for him in the Billboard album charts. He moved on to the Universal Music Group around 2012.

Other artists on J — some very successful, some not — included Annie Lennox (in the U.S.), Liza Minnelli, Maroon 5 (before they shot to fame on UMG), Canadian singer-songwriter Deborah Cox, Jazmine Sullivan, Leona Lewis, Pitbull, Mike Posner, Gavin DeGraw, Mario (the R&B singer, not the Nintendo video game character), and Tyrese.

In 2002, BMG purchased a majority stake in J. In 2004, BMG merged with Sony Music to form Sony BMG Music Entertainment; when this happened, Clive Davis became the head of the RCA Music Group, into which J now fell; that year, J welcomed AMERICAN IDOL winners Fantasia and Ruben Studdard to the label. In 2005, J Records merged its operations with Arista, but both continued to issue product separately.

On October 7, 2011, J, Jive and Arista were shut down as part of a restructuring of the RCA Music Group; the titles on the four labels that comprise it would effectively now come from RCA Records. Clive Davis remains employed at Sony Music as Chief Creative Officer.

This discography was researched through Discogs as well as through a series of Internet scavenger hunts, all of which were done via Google search results for possible UPC codes within the main numbering system.

CDs did not use a uniform label, but promotional copies usually had a white label or simply black ink printed onto the non-playing label of the disc in a variety of forms. White label CDs usually had the J logo to the left and the text “FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. Manufactured by DB Plus DIgital Services Inc.” at the bottom.

For vinyl LPs and 12" singles, J used a white label with the J logo in black at the top. The text at the bottom read “Marketed, Manufactured and Distributed by J Records, LLC, 745 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10151. All Rights Reserved. UNAUTHORIZED DUPLICATION IS A VIOLATION OF APPLICABLE LAWS.” In 2005, the text ring changed to “Marketed, Manufactured and Distributed by J Records, a unit of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, 745 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10151. All Rights Reserved.” Some albums contained the text “Manufactured in U.S.A. for J Records, L.L.C.” Promotional copies had the same label, but with text inserted reading “PROMO ONLY. NOT FOR SALE.” This later changed to “FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. NOT FOR SALE.” The background of the label tended to vary between releases on vinyl, which, at least on album, had been sporadic. Some releases on vinyl had a custom label, much like the CDs.

82876-XXXXX series

In 2003, BMG decided to launch another consolidated UPC-code-based numbering system for both albums and singles, this time also using it in the U.S. and Canada. As such, the numbers listed below are not consecutive. For convenience, only albums are listed here. Some releases were issued in conjunction with other labels, including Full Surface (Cassidy, Yung Wun) and Octone (Maroon 5).

During 2003, BMG released certain titles in the experimental DVD-Audio format; these carried a 9 suffix, as did DVD-Video titles from BMG. Also, from 2004 to approximately 2009, some releases on J were issued using the DualDisc format, with one side devoted to the main CD contents and the other essentially functioning as a standard DVD.

Some of the CDs on J from this series contain the copy-protection process MediaMax CD-3, a Digital Rights Management system which was brought to media attention during the controversy surrounding Sony BMG’s XCP (Extended Copy Protection) system. The main differences between the two were that you could stop the installation of MediaMax, the MediaMax software could still be visible (it was identified under a Windows Service program called “sbcphid”), and it could be uninstalled through Command Prompt (via the command sc delete spcphid).

Please note that there are many different numbers assigned to the same album within this discography, as (Sony) BMG sometimes issued the same album with different numbers. For proper guidance, I have opted to note which releases originated from outside the U.S.
