Spending money is much more difficult than making money. — Jack Ma

When we founded Red Bit, we knew the first step was to create at least a landing page to represent us, to provide information about the services we offer, link to our social accounts and allow people to contact us. Our budget was low. A new domain name, if you’re lucky, should cost between $1.50 and $15. Hosting adds on a few dollars a month to that cost. So we decided take advantage of something offered by GitHub.

GitHub Pages is a static site hosting service designed to host your personal, organization, or project pages directly from a GitHub repository.

GitHub Pages allows you to create static pages and have GitHub host them for you. Using your own domain is a simple process, too.

  1. Create an organization on GitHub (documentation)
  2. Create the repository for your page (e.g theredbit.github.io; documentation)
  3. Create your website
  4. Enabled GitHub Pages for your repository
  5. Use your own domain name
  6. Add Google Analytics
  7. Contact forms (thank you, @bbrennan)

If you follow those links, you will be able to set up your own static site easily and save some money on hosting. Another benefit is that you’re contributing to the open source community by open-sourcing your website.
